Shop itself is good and the people are nice, no issues with that. They do a good job on writing up estimates and provide photos/video to clearly see what is being diagnosed. The reason I am giving only one star is the pricing. Coming from the Washington DC area, I am used to seeing/paying premium prices. But I've NEVER seen prices this high in any shop I've taken any of my vehicles. I've taken cars to dealerships, speciality speed shops and custom performance shops and the markups on prices were astronomical 100%+ in most cases. I could have purchased high performance parts cheaper for what they were charging for typical aftermarket parts. Labor rates that were are $50-60 more an hour. I got 5 quotes on the same repairs from other local shops and they came in $3000-4000 less than 17th street. It was $450 just for diagnostics (never paid that much at a dealership or anywhere for that matter) stating since it was an older vehicle it needed more work. Old trucks are not complex machines like today's vehicles and I found it hard to follow that rationale. All that said I chose to pass on allowing them to do any repairs on my vehicle and took the $450 diagnostic as a cautionary tale and absolutely would not recommend based solely on pricing. This is a standard shop and not custom and honestly they should be ashamed at those prices. Every other shop that saw the pricing on my estimate had nothing bad to say about 17th Street, however they were even shocked by the pricing.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for acknowledging the friendliness and thoroughness of our team at 17th Street Automotive (your inspection report is attached below). We understand your concerns regarding the pricing and want to provide some clarity on the factors that contribute to our quotes. 1. Comprehensive Diagnostics: Your 1987 Dodge pickup, a classic 37 YEAR OLD TRUCK, you came in asking for our help and presented us with MULTIPLE issues including several road noises on acceleration, , loose tie rods, ball joints, loose steering, rattling around the u-joint, suspension and rear diff noise concerns, and a malfunctioning washer fluid system. Addressing these in older models requires a meticulous approach, often taking more time than with newer vehicles due to their unique configurations and potential for underlying issues not immediately visible. 2. Quality of Service: We pride ourselves on NOT just being a "standard shop." Our time commitment to our local small businesses and community, investment in the latest tools and updated equipment, and emphasis on continuous education for our team members—both online and in-person, even mentorship programs—are integral to providing service that goes above and beyond. This dedication ensures we can handle a wide array of vehicles EVERY YEAR, EVERY MAKE AND EVERY MODEL, including those that dealerships may not service due to their age or condition (which they didn't even take the time to help you, did they? because the dealership do not care about your old truck, go ahead and try to set an appointment and let us know how that goes!) 3. Documentation: As you mentioned, we document our findings with photos and videos, a practice not all shops undertake. This level of transparency is part of our effort to ensure you're well-informed about your vehicle's condition and the necessity of recommended repairs. We worked on your truck since February 7th and you just now picked it up on the 12th, we brought your truck in for safe keeping every night in our facility to make sure it's safe and that nothing happens to the beauty of the old truck, that we appreciate. 4. Customized Solutions: While we understand that price comparisons are essential, it's also important to consider the value and quality of the components being used, the 3yr/36k mile warranty offered, and the EXPERTISE/AGE of the technicians (you expect a 18 y.o. kid to work on a 37 year old truck, Let alone figure out all your issues??? GOOD LUCK.... Our pricing reflects not only the cost of high-quality parts but also the specialized knowledge, and skills required to correctly diagnose and repair older vehicles. And why get 5 quotes from 5 different shops? isn't 2 good enough? is there a underlying loyalty commitment issues? 5 quotes over and over from 5 different shops? so we can pick who to give a 1 star review to? We cannot run our business on a customer's budget unfortunately, we tried to help you and you give us a 1 star review for what? To bash us for our pricing because it doesn't fit your old school pricing? 5 shops? FIVE? Tire kicker... 5. Community and Cleanliness: Our commitment to the community and maintaining a clean, welcoming waiting room/shop environment are aspects of our business that we hold in high regard. These contribute to a positive customer experience and reflect our overall dedication to excellence. We genuinely appreciate your feedback and want to ensure that our customers feel valued and respected (goes both ways). If there are specific aspects of the quote you'd like to discuss further, or if you have suggestions on how we might improve our pricing, we are more than willing to engage in a constructive conversation at 757-425-8917 ask for Billy. Our goal is to ensure that every customer leaves our shop feeling satisfied with the service and value they receive ✌️ God Bless 🙏 https://shop.tekmetric.com/inspection/JSnAR0oghCypN6axiaVL_D7lMy7sBXlWraRkxbU44hU
